Tour guides get refreshed on CHS history

The guys and gals on the forefront of explaining Charleston's history to the masses will soon be tested on their extensive knowledge of the city's history after officials have updated their material for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Your favorite carriage tour will have a few new spins with updated material for the tour guide.

Some say you can’t rewrite history. And, to a degree, they are correct. But, when it comes to retelling the age-old tales of historic Charleston’s ravaged past, there’s a few updates that are being made.

Each tour guide is trained with a textbook of sorts that’s put together by the Historic Charleston Foundation. And for the past 27 years, the manual has been the same. But, with new emerging historical records, the foundation saw fit to update The City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual, according to a report by ABC News 4.

“Things have changed on our street scapes. New scholarship has emerged about building histories and history in general,” said Katherine Saunders, the associate director of preservation at the Historic Charleston Foundation.

The updated manual still has a lot of the same info as the last one, but new elements that have become important to Charleston’s history and the landscapes to Charleston’s tourism have been added. Newly included material includes information about Lowcountry cuisine and Gullah culture, and sections labeled ‘’Mythbusters” to clear the air on some longstanding rumors.

“Tour guides, they’re on the front lines. They talk to visitors everyday. They’re the face of Charleston’s history and architecture,” Saunders said.

So, who better to clear things up and set the record straight?!

Each guide is required to study the manual and pass a 200-question test before they can hit the streets to share Charleston’s story.

Wanna brush up on your history of Charleston by yourself? You can pick up your own copy of the manual for $45 at the city’s tourism management office. You can also buy an electronic version for $15.
