Mayor is not in London and does not need $1,400 despite email

Folly Beach's mayor's email account was hacked, resulting in a slew of emails sent to friends and colleagues apparently pleading for help from London and $1,400 in cash.

Folly Beach Mayors email was hacked.

Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin is on rumor patrol after an email was apparently sent from him saying he was in London and needed $1,400 to get home after being robbed.

Sound familiar?

Yup, it’s the common hacker scam that plagues close friends and families of normal people by emailing them in distress.

But, this time, it has gotten to many more than just Goodwin’s friends and family. In a report by Midlands Connect he wants to make one thing perfectly clear:

Whatever you may have heard over email, he’s not in London and he doesn’t need $1,400.

Goodwin says he spent much of the holiday weekend explaining this to concerned friends who received emails from his account saying he and his family were stranded in London after being robbed and needed money to return to the U.S.

The hackers requested money to be wired to an address in the British capital.

It’s not clear if anyone actually wired any money or not, but Goodwin says it took more than two hours of work with IT to get his account restored.
